2,500年前、中国の哲学者老子は、次のように言った。「対話交信は無我の状態に通ずる。」自己を無にして、他者の立場で考え自我を忘れ無我となれば,外界で私が見たもの、出くわしたものが知らず知らずのうちに私の中に渾然一体となって入り込んでくる。他者と対話交信するということは、他者に心を開きそして理解することである。老子の哲学に包摂されたコミュニケーションの過程の中に、私は時の流れというものを感ずる。時は存在しているがそれ自体変遷し続ける。写真を撮影する際に時の観念は大変重要である。
私の写真の中に現れる認識したものを構成する視点は自然の時の流れに逆行する。一般的に私たちは近くにあるものが遠くにあるものよりよく見える。しかし私の写真は遠いものが近くにあるものよりよく見えるような構造になっている。これは人間の視覚作用に反している。見る者の視点が変わると、幻想が対象化される。それ故にとても興味深い現象が現れてくる。現実と想像の間にあって、一枚の写真の中にあたかも二つの時空が存在するかのように見せるのが私の作品である。写真が時の流れの様々な軌跡を現し、それら軌跡が内包する多くのサインや表現を際立たせ、本当に起こったことの記憶や実際は起こらなかったがやろうと意図したものを表現しようとするのが私の写真である。私の写真の中には現存するもの、何かを示唆するものそして隠れているものが含まれている。これら自体が時を表現している。
最近の２年間、私は都市に生きる人々とそれを取り巻く風景を撮影してきた。東京、北京、パリ、オスロ、ニューヨーク、シドニー、そしてカトマンドゥーである。この写真集は私とそれらの都市、それらの社会そしてそれら社会を取り巻く環境との関係、つまり「あなた と「私 の関係を反映しておりその関係に対する洞察でもある。私がどのように外の世界と出会いそして対話交信してきたかをこの写真集は表現している。 人々やそれを取り巻く環境と関わっていくことは私の最大の関心事である。自己と他者との関わり方やコミュニケーションを再考する私の写真を通して、私は読者の皆様と体験を分かち合えたらと思っている。
写真は被写体や写真のテーマの重要性を強調することが多い。写真の中で写真を撮るものと被写体の両者は写真が撮影された瞬間、同一の絶対空間の中に存在する。私の作品は、そのような一瞬ではあるが両者の強い絆と決して終わることのない対話を表現することを追求している。この写真集は自己がそこには存在しない自画像であり、言葉のない物語の本であり、これといった答えのない終わりなき問いの一覧である。

2500년 전 중국의 철학자 장자는 소통이란 비움과 함께 타자와 연결하려는 실천이라고 했다. 스스로를 비우는 것은 다른 사람의 입장이 되어 보는 것을 의미한다. 내가 비워져있을 때 다른 사람이 말을 건네고 내게로 걸어 들어올 수 있다. 소통이란 타자에 대한 열림이고 이해이며 연결하려는 의지이다. 이런 소통의 과정에서 나는 시간의 흐름을 느낀다. 시간이란 끊임없이 흐르며 존재 그 자체를 증명한다. 사진에서 시간이란 매우 중요하다.
나의 작업에서는 시각인지구조가 뒤집어져 있다. 우리는 보통 멀리 있는 사물보다 가까이 있는 사물을 또렷하게 잘 볼 수 있다. 그러나 나의 작업에서는 가까이 있는 사물보다 오히려 멀리 있는 사물이 더 잘 보인다. 이것은 ‘나’라는 주체가 프레임 안에 들어가 있으며, 동시에 프레임 안의 주체와 객체가 감상자로부터 객관화 되어 있음을 의미한다. 이로 인해 재미있는 현상이 일어났다. 한 공간 안에 마치 다른 시간의 층이 존재하는 듯 보인다. 이 두 층 사이의 위상(포텐샬)의 차이가 현실과 환상이 공존하는 듯 착각을 불러일으킨다. 그리고 이것이 작품에서 두꺼운 시간을 보여줄 수 있는 이유다. 하여, 실제 기억들과 아직은 일어나지 않은 사건들, 많은 징후들을 포함한다. 두꺼운 현재는 아직 일어나지 않은 잠재적 사건들을 함유하고 있으며 여러 표면 효과들의 혼합물이다. 그것들은 아주 개인적인 방식으로 시간을 의미한다.
나는 2년간 내게 생경한 세상의 7개 도시들(도쿄, 파리, 베이징, 오슬로, 뉴욕, 시드니, 카트만두)을 다녔다. 여기서 7개 도시는 크게 의미가 없다. 이곳들은 내가 가족이나 친구와 함께 하지 않고 처음으로 혼자서 카메라와 함께 여행한 곳들이다. 그 이전에는 혼자서 여행을 해본 적이 없다. 나의 첫 사진집 ‘island'가 나의 가족, 이웃과 친척들, 그리고 내가 자라고 함께 숨 쉬어 온 부산이라는 도시와의 소통과 관계에 대한 작업이라면 'The Seventh Sense' 는 나와 생경한 도시들, 사회, 환경, 그리고 처음 만난 사람들 사이의 관계와 소통에 대한 반영이자 영감들이다. 이 작업들은 내가 낯선 세상과 어떻게 만나고 소통하는가를 보여준다. 소통과 관계는 언제나 나의 중요한 관심사가 되어 왔다. 이 작업들은 그 관계와 소통에 대한 지극히 개인적인 반영이며 나는 이것들을 함께 나누기를 원한다.
사진은 종종 그 대상이나 주제의 중요성이 강조되어 왔다. 나의 작업들에서 대상과 작가는 촬영에서 절대동일공간에서 함께 놓여진다. 미약하지만 그러나 강한 결속과 계속되는 소통, 끊임없는 상호관계성의 축척물이다. 이 작품들은 내가 없는 자화상이자, 말이 없는 이야기책이며 명확한 답이 없는 끊임없는 질문들이다.

2,500 years ago, Chinese philosopher Tao said that "communication is making a connection to oblivion." Oblivion is to emptying oneself and being in other's shoes. When I'm empty, It is possible that the object encountered can come and walk into me. Making connection is to be open to and to understand others. In the process of communication, influenced by the Tao's theory, I feel the flow of time. Time, which resides in, is constantly changing and proving its very existence, by itself. Time is very important in photography.
In my works, sight of cognitive structure is reversed. Generally we can see close objects clearer than distant objects. But in my work's distant objects are well-seen rather than close objects. It is not how human's vision works. When the authority of sight is changed, It can be said that the vision is objectified. Therefore, very interesting phenomenon arises. Between the verge of reality and fantasy, my work shows that as if there are two different time spaces in the one. That is why it can show many traces of flown-time, which contains many signs and expressions, real memories and intentions of things have not happened.
My works contain thick presence, signs, and many latent cases, that have not occurred yet and mixtures of surface effects. They are what it means to express time in a personal manner.
I have been taking photos of people and surroundings in cities of the world for the last two years. Tokyo, Beijing, Paris, Oslo, New York, Sydney and Katmandu. This collection is of reflection and insights on the relationships between the cities, society, environment, you and me. It expresses how I meet and communicate with the rest of the world. The relationships and communications between people as well as its surroundings have always been one of my great interests. With this body of work, I wanted to share my very personal reflections on relationships and communications.
Photos are often taken emphasizing on certain objects or themes of importance. In these photographs both the photographer and the object reside in the same absolute space of a snap. Articulation of mutual relationships between their faint yet powerful bonding and never-ending communications are something to look for. This is a self portrait without self, a storybook without words and a list of endless questions with no definite answers.
